All streaks must come to an end.

The Warrior soccer team delivered that end to Mount Horeb’s six-year unbeaten streak in the Badger North, toppling the defending state champions 2-1 on Tuesday.

Waunakee got on the board quickly, scoring in just the eighth minute. Cole Kettner sent a long pass to Sam Acker, who found Jacob Mouille on a cross. Mouille finished the job, burying the ball in the back of the net for a 1-0 lead.

As the game progressed, the intensity picked up. Mount Horeb earned several free kicks in the half, but the Waunakee defense held as Hudson Miller cleared one with a header, and goalie Sullivan Schwitters punched another clear.

Both teams had several more scoring opportunities, but neither were able to add any goals to the scoreboard, and the half ended 1-0.

Mount Horeb came out fast in the second half, scoring off a corner three minutes after play resumed. Now 1-1, the physicality of the game increased as the second half progressed.

The Warriors defense of seniors Blake Mueller, Ben Koss, Carson Ejzak, Hudson Miller, Owen Lee and Cole Fetters did a great job holding the back line.

Waunakee continued to get chances offensively; Hudson Miller was just high on a shot from the middle, and Mason Miller had a shot on goal saved in the 72nd minute.

With just five minutes to go, Mueller sent the ball upfield to Brennen Miller, who drove deep into the box and sent a beautiful shot to the far side of the goal for the game winner at 84:44. Mount Horeb wasn’t able to find the goal for the rest of the game, and the Warriors put an end to the Vikings’ 31-game unbeaten streak stretching back to Sept. 11, 2012, when Waunakee beat Mount Horeb 3-2.

Still riding high from their huge win on Tuesday, the Warriors welcomed Monona Grove to Waunakee for a Badger Conference crossover match on Thursday.

It took a few minutes for both teams to get a feel for each other, and there were few scoring threats early.

Nathan Mais opened the scoring by placing a nice shot in the left side of the goal for a 1-0 lead at the 20:23 mark.

Monona Grove immediately responded, however. They put in for the equalizer just minutes later to tie the game at one.

Ten minutes later, the Warriors put a kick into the box, and Mason Miller found the top right corner of the goal for a 2-1 lead.

Nick Ohm made a couple of nice saves as the half ended to maintain the 2-1 halftime lead.

Monona Grove came out strong in the second half, but more aggressive goalie work by Ohm kept them off the board. The Warriors had several chances in the second half, but none were able to sneak past the goalie to extend their lead. The Silver Eagles failed to get another equalizer, though, and when time expired, Waunakee owned a two-game winning streak.

The very next day, Waunakee played another home game, this time against Monroe.

Waunakee 5,

Monroe 0

Waunakee racked up their third home win of the week by thoroughly dominating Monroe. Mouille opened up the scoring in the 15th minute with a penalty kick to make it a 1-0 game, and the Warriors were off. Waunakee continued to pepper the goalie with Kettner, Mais, Brennen Miller and Dresen all taking shots.

Late in the half, Cameron Hayko advanced up the middle and found Mouille, who put in his second goal of the night as Waunakee doubled their lead.

As the half was closing, Brennen Miller fired a shot that ricocheted off the goalie and in, giving Waunakee a 3-0 lead at halftime.

The second half continued to put pressure on Monroe, earning numerous corners and free kicks. In the 55th minute, Kettner pulled a quick release on a free kick just outside the box. He hit Acker, who buried goal number four in the back of the net.

The chances kept coming, and Kettner got in on the scoring with five minutes to go, to hammering home the fifth and final goal.
